What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease (PD) belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The four primary symptoms of PD are tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs aRata Penuhnd trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination. As these symptoms become more pronounced, patients may have difficulty walking, talking, or completing other simple tasks. PD usually affects people over the age of 50. Early symptoms of PD are subtle and occur gradually. In some people the disease progresses more quickly than in others. As the disease progresses, the shaking, or tremor, which affects the majority of PD patients may begin to interfere with daily activities. Other symptoms may include depression and other emotional changes; difficulty in swallowing, chewing, and speaking; urinary problems or constipation; skin problems; and sleep disruptions. There are currently no blood or laboratory tests that have been proven to help in diagnosing sporadic PD. Therefore the diagnosis is based on medical history and a neurological examination. The disease can be difficult to diagnose accurately. Doctors may sometimes request brain scans or laboratory tests in order to rule out other diseases.

Is there any treatment?

At present, there is no cure for PD, but a variety of medications provide dramatic relief from the symptoms. Usually, patients are given levodopa combined with carbidopa. Carbidopa delays the conversion of levodopa into dopamine until it reaches the brain. Nerve cells can use levodopa to make dopamine and replenish the brain's dwindling supply. Although levodopa helps at least three-quarters of parkinsonian cases, not all symptoms respond equally to the drug. Bradykinesia and rigidity respond best, while tremor may be only marginally reduced. Problems with balance and other symptoms may not be alleviated at all. Anticholinergics may help control tremor and rigidity. Other drugs, such as bromocriptine, pramipexole, and ropinirole, mimic the role of dopamine in the brain, causing the neurons to react as they would to dopamine. An antiviral drug, amantadine, also appears to reduce symptoms. In May 2006, the FDA approved rasagiline to be used along with levodopa for patients with advanced PD or as a single-drug treatment for early PD.

In some cases, surgery may be appropriate if the disease doesn't respond to drugs. A therapy called deep brain stimulation (DBS) has now been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In DBS, electrodes are implanted into the brain and connected to a small electrical device called a pulse generator that can be externally programmed. DBS can reduce the need for levodopa and related drugs, which in turn decreases the involuntary movements called dyskinesias that are a common side effect of levodopa. It also helps to alleviate fluctuations of symptoms and to reduce tremors, slowness of movements, and gait problems. DBS requires careful programming of the stimulator device in order to work correctly.

What is the prognosis?

PD is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. Although some people become severely disabled, others experience only minor motor disruptions. Tremor is the major symptom for some patients, while for others tremor is only a minor complaint and other symptoms are more troublesome. No one can predict which symptoms will affect an individual patient, and the intensity of the symptoms also varies from person to person.

What research is being done?

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conducts PD research in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and also supports additional research through grants to major medical institutions across the country. Current research programs funded by the NINDS are using animal models to study how the disease progresses and to develop new drug therapies. Scientists looking for the cause of PD continue to search for possible environmental factors, such as toxins, that may trigger the disorder, and study genetic factors to determine how defective genes play a role. Other scientists are working to develop new protective drugs that can delay, prevent, or reverse the disease.

More information about Parkinson's Disease research is available at http://www.ninds.nih.gov/research/parkinsonsweb/index.htm

Surgical treatment could allow women to re-grow their breast.

When women have a vicious breast cancer attack, nothing to done except to remove the breast that called mastectomy. So, mastectomy was the most frighten things for all women. But women can feel of worry. Now, scientists have developed a revolutionary surgical treatment that could help with breast re-growth among breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies.

While it may be three years before the breast re-growth treatment is fully developed, human trials for the procedure will soon begin, which involves inserting a biodegradable chamber into the patient’s chest. The chamber is contoured to match the woman’s breast shape, and contains stem cells from her own fat tissue to aid in breast re-growth—the cells should divide and grow to recreate the permanent fat found in breasts.

Phillip Marzella, of the Bernard O'Brien Institute of Microsurgery, said in an interview with ABC radio: “We are hoping to move on to other organs using the same principle – a chamber that protects and contains cells as they grow and they restore their normal function. So it is a pretty major leap for regenerative surgery and medicine.”

HAVE A GOOD READING ABOUT BANANA..

After Reading THIS, you'll NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!

Bananas: Containing three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana.

This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect way to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system

Overweight and at work: Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in "The New Eng land Journal of Medicine, "eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

You might want to pass this tidbit to your friends!!!!

10 Most Dangerous Foods

You might think you're eating healthy. You might want to think again.

We all love to eat, but the ugly reality is that some foods can make you sick. We're not talking about salmonella here; none of what's listed below should send you directly to the hospital with a debilitating illness, though Jeremy Piven recently claimed to have mercury sickness from a diet too rich in sushi. While the verdict is still out on Piven’s poisoning, certain foods, when eaten too frequently, can pose a very real health risk over time (especially if you are thinking of having a baby or if you are feeding a small child).

The dangers of these foods range from PCBs in certain fish, to large trace amounts of pesticides on fresh fruit and veggies. This past year, the National Institutes of Health even linked long-term pesticide exposure to diabetes. To avoid these health risks, we came up with a list of ten foods to beware, both for your health and for the health of the environment.

1. Farmed Salmon

Tim Fitzgerald, a scientist with the Oceans Program of the Environmental Defense Fund, says, "Salmon is the third most popular seafood in the US, so people are eating a lot of it and most of what they're eating is farmed. As a result of the feed salmon are given, they are very high in PCBs and environmental contaminants. For reasons of health, the environment, and popularity with consumers, farmed salmon is at the top of the list of seafood to avoid." The average dioxin level in farmed-raised salmon is 11 times higher than that in wild salmon .

2. Conventionally Grown Bell Peppers

Even though pesticides are present in most food at very small trace levels, their negative impact on health is well documented, and certain produce carries a greater risk. According to a report done by the Environmental Working Group, sweet bell peppers are the vegetable with the most pesticides detected on a single sample (as many as 11 were found on one sample). In addition, bell peppers are the vegetable with the most pesticides overall with 64 different pesticides found on samples. Better to buy organic and eliminate this risk.

3. Non-Organic Strawberries

In order to increase sweetness, some growers of non-organic strawberries are said to irrigate the plants with water laced with the artificial sweetener NutraSweet. And that luscious red color is caused by the fungicide captan, recognized by the EPA as aprobable human carcinogen. Do you really want to eat something bathed in a chemical sweetener and doused with a likely cancer-causer? Probably not.

4. Chilean Sea Bass

Chilean sea bass, otherwise known as Patagonian toothfish, lives for a very long time and grows to a large size; both are automatic warning bells for being high in mercury. Fitzgerald says, "We have some pretty comprehensive data that Chilean sea bass are extraordinarily high in mercury and not something you want to eat very often. When you factor in the very serious environmental issues with illegal fishing and bycatch, it's definitely a double whammy for us."

"That said, we don't want to give the impression that if you eat one piece of fish with mercury, you're going to get mercury poisoning. But if you continually eat fish with a lot of mercury over an extended period of time, that's when you're going to see more serious issues like unexplainable fatigue, memory problems, and tingling or numbness in your extremities," Fitzgerald says.

5. Non-Organic Peaches

Peaches aren't just juicy and delicious, they're magnets for pesticides, often topping the Organic Center's consumer's pocket guide for pesticide-riddled produce. The Center's chief scientist Charles Benbrook says, "Peaches top the list because their skins get soft at the end of their season on the tree and the last pesticide spray can move right through that skin and get into the tissue of the fruit in a matter of hours. That's why it's easy to find peaches with ten different pesticide residues in them."

Benbrook adds, "The last thing that we want to do is scrooge people from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. If anything, we want people to eat two to three more servings of produce a day. But the science is irrefutable. If the average family sought out organic versions of the top four fruits and vegetables they eat the most often, they could eliminate 90% of their overall pesticide exposure."

6. Genetically Modified Corn

If you read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, one of the more shocking truths is the amount of corn found in the American diet. Corn is in everything from frozen yogurt to ketchup, from mayonnaise and mustard to hot dogs and vitamins. Unless specified as organic, the corn you're ingesting is likely genetically modified. Genetically modified organisms have not been tested thoroughly enough for long-term consequences, but a series of studies has found significant health risks in animals tested, and an increase in certain allergies for humans.
bluefin tuna

7. Bluefin Tuna

Maybe it's a good thing that not everyone has the luxury of eating a lot of toro at the sushi bar, because bluefin tuna is in grave danger from a population perspective. It's also one of the more dangerous fish for mercury consumption, making it both a bad eco choice and a health risk for mercury exposure. Fitzgerald says, "The bluefin tuna is in such horrible shape right now. There are some populations that may go commercially extinct in the near future if we don't ease up on the fishing."

8. Industrially Farmed Chicken

While there has been much debate over chickens and hormones, there exists a great deal of misinformation. Poultry is not allowed to be given hormones in the United States, so while reports have existed for years that schoolchildren are experiencing early puberty due to excess hormones traced to chicken, there have not been enough studies done to prove this conclusively .

What we do know is that tests done by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy found arsenic in conventional chickens. Arsenic has been linked to cancer and contributes to other diseases including heart disease, diabetes and deterioration of mental faculties. In addition, a study conducted in 2002 for the Sierra Club and the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy found multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria in brand-name poultry products . Scientists believe antibiotic use in animals raised for food contributes to antibiotic-resistant bacteria transferred to humans, mainly through contaminated food, resulting in drug-resistant infections. In order to avoid poultry that's been dosed with antibiotics or given feed laced with arsenic, better to opt for an organic chicken at the grocery store.

9. Non-Organic Apples

"Apples come with a red flag based on the sheer amount of apples in our diet and the reliance of pesticides in humid parts of the country," says Benbrook. Apple skins contain higher pesticide residues. Higher risk apples are grown in the humid mid-Atlantic states and Michigan: They use more pesticides than California, Oregon or Washington state. A lot of those pesticides seep into the skin of the apple, so it's always good to peel it. Unfortunately, approximately 1/3 of the nutrients come off with the peel, according to Benbrook.

10. Cattle Treated With rBGH

The use of genetically engineered drug rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) is widespread among the cattle industry in the United States. Banned by all European nations and Canada, U.S. dairy farmers continue to use the synthetic hormone which escalates production of the cow's own hormone ICF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1). This hormone does not break down when humans consume milk from those cows and has been traced to higher risks of certain cancers, including breast cancer, and hormonal disorders. The only guarantee against ingesting these dangerous excess hormones is to buy milk labeled "no rBGH."

Aerobik Naikkan Kolesterol HDL

(sumber:www.kapanlagi.com)

Smoking, Drugs, Alcohol And Breast Feeding

This is Government in the world advice for breast feeding mums:

Smoking And Breast Feeding

If you smoke tobacco, it is best for you and your baby if you try to quit smoking as soon as possible. Talk to your doctor for help. Tobacco from cigarettes contains a drug called nicotine, which transfers to breast milk and may even affect the amount of milk you produce. The risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) becomes greater when a mother smokes or when the baby is around second-hand (or passive) smoke. Smoking and passive smoke may also increase respiratory and ear infections in babies. If you can't quit, it is still better to breastfeed because the benefits of breast milk still outweigh the risks from nicotine.

Illegal Drugs

If you are breastfeeding, you should not take illegal drugs. Some drugs, such as cocaine and PCP, can make the baby high. Other drugs, such as heroin and marijuana can cause irritability, poor sleeping patterns, tremors, and vomiting. Babies can become addicted to these drugs. If you are having a hard time quitting, ask your doctor or a trusted friend for help.

Alcohol

If you breastfeed, you should avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol does get to your baby through breast milk, and has been found to peak in its concentration about 30 to 60 minutes after drinking, or 60 to 90 minutes if it is taken with food. The effects of alcohol on the breastfeeding baby are directly related to the amount of alcohol a mother consumes. Moderate to heavy drinking (2 or more alcoholic drinks per day) can interfere with the let-down reflex and the milk-ejection reflex. It also can harm the baby's motor development and cause slow weight gain. For this reason, and for your general health, if alcohol is used, intake should be limited. Light drinking or an occasional drink is okay, but avoid breastfeeding for two hours after the drink.

Medications

Always talk with your doctor before taking any medications. Most medications pass into your milk in small amounts. If you take medication for a chronic condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma, your medication may already have been studied in breastfeeding women, so you should be able to find information to help you make an informed decision with the help of your doctor. Newer medications and medications for rare disorders may have less information available. The American Academy of Pediatrics has information about many prescription and over-the-counter medications posted on their web site at: www.aap.org.

In general, when breastfeeding it is safe to take:
  • acetaminophen (like Tylenol)
  • antibiotics
  • epilepsy medications (although one, Primidone, should be taken with caution — talk with your doctor about this drug)
  • most antihistamines
  • moderate amounts of caffeine (remember there is caffeine in soda and in chocolate)
  • decongestants
  • ibuprofen (like Advil)
  • insulin
  • quinine
  • thyroid medicines
  • progestin-only birth control pills (the "mini-pill")
Medications that are not safe to take when breastfeeding:

Some drugs can be taken by a nursing mother if she stops breastfeeding for a few days or weeks. She can pump her milk and discard it during this time to keep up her supply. During this time, the baby can drink her previously frozen breast milk or formula. These drugs include radioactive drugs used for some diagnostic tests like Gallium-67, Copper 64, Indium 111, Iodine 123, Iodine125, Iodine-131, radioactive sodium, or Technetium-99m, antimetabolites, and a few cancer chemotherapy agents.

There are drugs that if new mothers have to take them, they need to choose between taking them or breastfeeding. Some of these drugs that should never be taken while breastfeeding include:
  • Bromocriptine (Parlodel) — a drug for Parkinson's disease, it also decreases a woman's milk supply.
  • Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, and most chemotherapy drugs for cancer — these drugs kill cells in the mother's body and may harm the baby.
  • Ergotamine (for migraine headaches); Methotrexate (for arthritis); and Cyclosporine (for severe arthritis and psoriasis, aplastic anemia, Crohn's disease, kidney disease, and for after organ transplant surgery).

Drugs whose effects on nursing infants is not known but may be cause for concern include:
  • Antianxiety drugs — Alprazolam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Midazolam, Perphenazine, Prazepam, Quazepam, Temazepam.
  • Antidepressant drugs — Amitriptyline, Amoxapine, Bupropion, Clomipramine, Desipramine, Dothiepin, Doxepin, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Imipramine, Nortriptyline, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Trazodone.
  • Antipsychotic drugs — Chlorpromazine Galactorrhea, Chlorprothixene, Clozapine, Haloperidol, Mesoridazine, Trifluoperazine.
  • Other drugs — Amiodarone, Chloramphenicol, Clofazimine, Lamotrigine, Metoclopramide, Metronidazole, Tinidazole.

Diet And Nutrition While Breast Feeding

This is Government advice for breast feeding mums:

If you generally have a good diet, you will produce healthy breast milk for your baby, even if you don't eat well at times. Women often try to improve their diets while they are pregnant. Continuing with an improved diet after your baby is born will help you stay healthy, which will help your mood and energy level. But, chronically undernourished women who have had diets very low in vitamins and minerals, and low stores in their bodies may produce milk that is lower than normal in some vitamins, especially vitamins A, D, B6, or B12. These breastfeeding mothers can help the vitamin levels in their milk return to normal by improving their diets or by taking vitamin supplements. It is recommended that nursing mothers take in about 2700 calories every day (about 500 calories more than a non-pregnant, non-nursing woman). For more information on having a healthy diet, see the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines).

Fluids

Many women think they have to drink a lot of fluids to have a good milk supply. This is actually untrue. But, you do need to drink enough fluids to stay well hydrated for your own health and strength to give your baby the best care you can. Always drink when you are thirsty, which is your body's signal that you need fluid. You can make it easy to remember to get enough fluid if you drink a glass of water or a nutritious beverage, like milk or juice, every time you feed your baby.

Caffeine

Many breastfeeding women wonder about how caffeine will affect their baby. Results from studies show that, while excessive caffeine intake (more than five 5 ounce cups of coffee per day) can cause the baby to be fussy and not able to sleep well, moderate caffeine intake (fewer than five 5 ounce cups) usually doesn't cause a problem for most breastfeeding babies.

Allergies

Research shows that a mother's milk is affected only slightly by the food in her diet. But sometimes a baby may have a reaction to something you eat (like spicy foods, foods that can cause gas, or dairy products). Symptoms in your baby of an allergy to something in your diet include diarrhea, rash, fussiness, gas, dry skin, green stools with mucus, or the baby pulling up his/her knees and screaming. This doesn't mean the baby is allergic to your milk. If you stop eating whatever is bothering your baby, the problem usually goes away on its own.

Here's how to tell if something you are eating is upsetting your baby:

It takes about two to six hours for your body to digest and absorb the food you eat and pass it into your breast milk.

If you eat dinner at 5:00 P.M., and your baby shows the symptoms listed above around 9:00 P.M., think about what you ate for dinner. To be sure if those foods are causing the problem, you will have to eat them again and see if your baby has the same reaction.

If your baby seems very fussy, try keeping a record of what you eat and drink.

Bring the record to your baby's doctor to talk about a possible link between certain foods and your baby's symptoms.

If you think a particular food is causing a problem, stop eating it for a while and see if your baby reacts better. You can always try later to introduce that food again into your diet in small amounts. If your baby doesn't seem to react to it anymore, you could add more the next time.

Sometimes a baby can be born with a condition called primary lactase deficiency or with galactosemia, in which he or she can't tolerate breast milk. This happens when the body can't break down lactose, a sugar found in the milk of humans and animals. Symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. Babies with severe galactosemia may have liver problems, malnutrition, or mental retardation. Babies with these conditions must be fed formula that comes from plants, such as soy milk or a special galactose-free formula.

Kurangi Risiko Penyakit Jantung

  • Berhenti merokok. Selain risiko nyata yang ditimbulkan rokok, yakni emphisema dan kanker, merokok meningkatkan kemungkinan terkena penyakit jantung.
  • Pertahankan berat badan sehat.

Treat Acne Without Using Any Creams Or Medication

If you suffer from Acne you know what an annoying condition it is. Acne's target is young adolescents and teenagers which are more prone to suffer from acne due to their social status.

If you have acne and had to deal with it yourself, you most probably now how difficult it is to get rid of it. You might have tried numerous amounts of different products, ranging from pills to creams, but to no avail.

This happens because the education in how to treat acne revolves around these different types of medication, without talking too much about the most elementary things to do in order to treat the problem.

What are the elementary factors then?

Keep Skin Clean

It is of utmost importance to keep your skin clean. It does not mean that a dirty face causes acne because it is the bacteria inside the skin that starts acne.

Cleaning you skin regularly will not cure acne but will help it stop from spreading on the rest of your skin and reducing the chances of becoming more severe.

It is advisable to wash skin thoroughly even if you are using ant-acne cream.

Right Choice of Food

The market is full of products helping you out in reducing the amount of sebum produced by sebaceous glands. Using these treatments alone will not help you ease the problem. Consider eating food containing Vitamin A and B.

Foods containing a lot of Vitamin A like spinach, sweet potatoes, apricots and carrots and Vitamin B, like vegetables, cereals, sweet corn, rice and berries help in regulating your hormones and sebum production.

Avoiding Over Production of hormones

Increase in the production of hormones will encourage acne growth. If you are under stress because of work, school or social problems you might need some form of relaxation to help you out.

Any sort of exercise like yoga or walking will help ease your stress and eventually your acne.
It is of utmost importance to avoid food and drinks that increase hormonal increase. This type of food includes caffeine, dairy products, carbohydrates and meat eventually produce toxins that will need to get out through your skin. When their path is blocked with a hair follicle toxins build up and together with sebum trigger acne.

It is a fact that most of the acne treatments that we try will not stop it completely.

Vitamin C Turunkan Kadar Asam Urat

Pregnancy & Back Pain - Oh my aching back!

Back pain and pregnancy just seem to go together! When you see a pregnant woman you see her rubbing her belly and holding her back. Why is it that the majority of pregnant women will have back ache as a nearly daily complaint? And, more importantly, what can you do about it?

Why Your Back Hurts

When you are pregnant your body produces a variety of hormones. One of these hormones is called Relaxin. Sounds like something really soothing and helpful, which it is, for birth. Relaxin causes the ligaments and the pelvis to soften to allow the baby out through the pelvis. This is also why pregnant women "waddle."

In addition the pelvis relaxing for the upcoming event of birth, your uterus is growing and this does two things:

  • Changes your center of gravity
  • Relaxing uterine ligaments cause additional strain to be placed on the spine and your surrounding muscles
  • Your overstretched abdominal muscles are also not equipped to handle the entire weight of the uterus so your spine and back muscles will bear this extra burden as well.

Posture is another culprit. As your mother would say, "Stand up straight, shoulders back..." I would add, "Uterus up and out, be proud!"

If this is not your first pregnancy you have two additional concerns regarding your back: your older children and the fact that second pregnancies tend to experience all symptoms of pregnancy a bit earlier on. Ensure that you lift you children using your legs and not your back, when bathing them kneel at the tub instead of bending at the waist (What waist?), or have someone else take on these chores. Children may need a bit of an explanation why you can't carry them around as much, but in the long run you will be grateful for protecting your back.

Prevention

Prevention is the best management for this discomfort. Preventative measures include:

  • Exercises (Particularly Pelvic Tilts)
  • Paying attention to your posture
  • Lifting and bending appropriately

Periksa Darah Dapat Identifikasi Kanker Indung Telur

Cholesterol, Statins And Heart Disease

Pharmaceutical companies have found Ancel Keys 1953 hypothesis that high fat diet = high cholesterol = heart disease very rewarding financially – unfortunately it looks as though he was wrong. His hypothesis has become completely ingrained in the thinking of the media, food manufacturers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, the government, the medical profession and most people in the western world and has turned into big business which will go a long way to protect itself.

Ancel Keys was the Director of the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene at the University of Minnesota. He used data from seven countries to show that the higher the dietary fat consumption, the higher the blood cholesterol levels, the greater the risk of heart disease. Unfortunately in order to support his hypothesis, he ignored data from many other countries and cultures which would have disproved it.

This information was gratefully received by food manufacturers who produced chemical fat free spreads, by governments, concerned at the increasing rate of heart disease who told everyone they must eat less fat, and by pharmaceutical companies who produced statin drugs which were to be used as mass medication for anyone considered to be at risk of heart disease.
However there were dissenters who believed that the hypothesis was wrong. They found plenty of evidence that had been conveniently ignored. The famous one is of the study by Dr George Mann, professor of medicine and biochemistry at Vanderbilt university in Tennesee. In the 1970's he studied the Masai in Kenya and found a group of people who ate milk, meat and fat, and had virtually a zero rate of heart disease. His resulting article in the New England Journal of Medicine described the diet-heart hypothesis as “the greatest scam in the history of medicine”.

Dr Malcolm Kendrick has done a 14 country study looking at the correlation between saturated fat consumption and heart disease, and, using figures from the WHO, found that the seven countries with lowest saturated fat consumption had the highest rates of heart disease. (1)

The Framingham study – conducted over 49 years – has found that high intake of saturated fats reduced the rate of strokes and coronary heart disease. The Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial involving 361,662 men where cholesterol consumption was cut by 42% and saturated fat consumption by 28%, had no effect on heart disease morbidity or mortality. In fact, a later study found that those who followed a cholesterol lowering diet were twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who didn't (2,3).

Cholesterol is important to cellular health and many studies show its protective benefits, with elderly people who have high cholesterol levels living longer than those with low levels. Eleven out of eighteen studies of elderly people found that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for coronary heart disease – and the other seven studies found that it wasn't a risk factor in early mortality from any cause. Studies have also found that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for women, so it would appear that there are few people for whom it is a risk factor. The Lancet, in 1995, published a study of 450,000 people, and concluded that there was no association between blood cholesterol and stroke.

In fact several studies have shown higher mortality from cardiovascular disease with low cholesterol levels – this includes low total lipids, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL – the largest study to date is one of over 1000 patients with heart disease at UCLA in Los Angeles – this found much higher mortality over five years from those with low cholesterol (4).

A Dutch study of 1200 individuals over 65 looking at the relationship between cholesterol levels and mental function found, over a six year period, lower levels were associated with a reduction in cognition and information processing speed (5).

Most studies of young and middle aged men have found high cholesterol levels to be a risk factor for heart disease – these men are often highly stressed, another risk factor by itself, and cholesterol is used as building material for many stress hormones. So the treatment required is for stress rather than cholesterol.

Cholesterol is required for :
  • proper brain and nerve function
  • endocrine glands
  • blood vessel integrity
  • absorption of fat soluble vitamins eg vit D. Vitamin D contains cholesterol, and it protects against multiple sclerosis and all diseases resulting from lowered immunity including cancer and HIV
Cholesterol is produced by the liver, and levels are regulated by the liver. A healthy liver will be better able to regulate cholesterol levels. Increased amounts of cholesterol are produced by the liver in response to tissue trauma due to physical injury or inflammation which requires cholesterol as part of the healing process. This is the process that occurs in atherosclerosis, where the cholesterol containing plaques that form in arteries are a direct result of a direct irritation of the tissue by infection, toxins of some other inflammatory process. Many potential causes of this irritation have been proposed - diabetes, trans fatty acid consumption, high homocysteine levels, stress, and viral and bacterial infection, particularly cytomegalovirus and chlamydia.

Statins, medication prescribed largely to reduce cholesterol levels, do appear to have benefits for some of those with cardiovascular disease – but it appears not to be due to their cholesterol lowering ability but due to their anti inflammatory action and blood-thinning effects. Also the actual benefit is minimal – it has been calculated if statins were taken for 30 years, the average increase in lifespan would be 2 months and this benefit would only be seen in men with pre-existing heart disease(6).

Those who have been shown not to benefit from statins are the elderly, men without existing heart disease and women – which covers quite a few of those on statins. Unfortunately, GPs in the UK are actively encouraged to get cholesterol levels as low as possible, and they are paid if they can achieve this in a high enough percentage of their practice population.
Statins are currently the most expensive single item of drug expenditure to the NHS, which together with all the unnecessary cholesterol tests and payments to GPs, makes them an enormous drain on the NHS.

Statins may not be required, and have the potential for side effects including liver damage, peripheral neuropathy, joint and muscle pain, and muscle weakness, including heart muscle. All these problems are appearing in ever increasing numbers in those on statins. Consultant rheumatologist Ian Morris has seen increasing incidence of patients with severe musculo-skeletal effects due to statin use. He considers that the evidence in favour of statins is based on studies sponsored by pharmaceutical companies which has been subject to statistical manipulation and selective presentation(7).

Statins work by inhibiting enzymes required for cholesterol production, and also co-enzyme Q10 production – the latter is vital for intra cellular energy production, and has been shown to be depleted by statins. It is vital to supplement with co-Q10 for anyone taking statins – those without symptoms should take 50-100mg daily, and up to 150mg with symptoms, which can take some months of statin use before they appear. Foods with high co-Q10 levels include organ meats, nuts, sesame seeds, oily fish and broccoli.

Management And Prevention Of Heart Disease

The natural healing approach is to deal with any cause of inflammation in the body. This is likely to be dietary – food intolerances and over acidic diets – so alcohol, caffeine, red meat, trans fatty acids (see below), dairy and wheat will need to be reduced, and maybe cut out altogether if there is a food intolerance. Antioxidants are important as they will reduce any inflammatory processes in the circulatory system. For example pomegranate juice has been found to be effective against atherosclerosis, inflammation and high cholesterol levels.

Liver function also needs to be addressed as an inefficient liver will not clear up excess blood fats. Herbs such as artichoke, commiphora mukul, fenugreek, turmeric, garlic and cayenne are all used to reduce cholesterol levels by improving liver function.

High stress levels involve the hypothalamic-pituitary- adrenal glands (HPA axis) which produce the hormones (including cortisol and adrenaline) needed to deal with the stress – insulin is part of the calming down, or opposing action after stress has been dealt with. With constant stress levels this process doesn't have a beginning and an end, it becomes constant. High cortisol levels result in the deposition of visceral fat in the abdomen, raised blood pressure, lowered immunity and raised blood sugar and insulin levels – in other words metabolic syndrome X – heart disease and diabetes. Other causes of high cortisol levels include steroid use, depression, smoking and spinal cord injury.

Adaptogenic herbs are able to normalise cortisol and other stress hormone levels after stressful events – specifically rhaponticum, eleutherococcus, rhodiola, withania and panax ginseng.

A low GI (glycaemic index) diet has been shown to significantly reduce cholesterol levels, specifically LDL levels – it also reduces the risk of diabetes, improves insulin sensitivity in diabetics, and reduces the damaging effects of highly variable blood sugar level. C-reactive protein – a measure of inflammation in the body – is significantly decreased by weight loss and low GI diet. Insulin and glucose normalising herbs include eleuthero, rhaponticum, rhodiola and holy basil (Ocimium sanctum).

Trans fatty acids, the chemically changed oils developed by the cholesterol reduction industry, have been found not only to increase cholesterol levels, but also to cause atherosclerosis, damage heart muscle, the immune system and cause cancer and infertility – despite all this, vegetable oils and margarines are still being promoted as heart healthy. It has been estimated that the average adult in the West eats 15-20g of trans fats daily – from trans fats found in baked, fried and processed foods.

Natural oils and fats, especially those with relatively high omega 3 concentrations – saturated and unsaturated – do not have this detrimental effect on the body, they are actively beneficial. Oils from fish are especially high in omega 3's, as are oils from hemp seed and linseeds. A Japanese study reported in the Lancet in 2007 found that two servings of oily fish per week, or 900mg/day of EPA and DHA offered the same level of protection as statins.

Cardiovascular tonic herbs are often rich in flavonoids, which are also antioxidant -many of them also play a role in reducing anxiety and stress – they include hawthorn, garlic, linden, gingko, night flowering cactus (Selenicerus grandiflorus), coleus (Coleus forskohlii), guggul (Commiphora mukul), yarrow and motherwort.

Matthew Wood considers yarrow to be a useful herb in treating the cardiovascular system – he says it thins and decongests the blood, lowering blood pressure, relieving the burden on the heart; he quotes Messegue on yarrow, who says it is antispasmodic and soothing to the heart.
David Hoffman says that hawthorn will keep the heart healthy, preventing the development of coronary disease. Hawthorn is high in flavonoid antioxidants and is also a great herb for stress and anxiety.

Cancer Prevention

An excerpt from the book A Living Miracle

This truly is the way to go! Though I wrote this book principally for people who have recently been diagnosed with this serious health challenge and those that care for them – I would also hope that many more interested readers will incorporate my prevention techniques into their daily lives – especially if cancer has been the cause of death of a family member, which greatly accentuates one’s risk:
  1. Eat a variety of organically produced foods – no single foodstuff provides all the nutrients that a person requires. It is important, therefore, to eat a wide variety of foods every day of your lives, including lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds.
  2. Maintain not just an ‘average’ bodyweight, but strive for an optimum weight and lean to fat ratio, to minimise strain on organs and joints and possible future health problems.
  3. Avoid too much fat in general and saturated fat from animal products in particular. A diet low in total fat may reduce the risk for cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, and rectum. Such a diet will likely be low in saturated fat and cholesterol and may also reduce risk of heart disease.
  4. Eat foods with adequate amounts of complex carbohydrate and fibre. In my practice, I find most people following a Western based diet eat inadequate amounts of natural whole grains in their natural sprouted state. I recommend an increase in the amount of these foods within your daily prevention plan by eating more fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes, whole grains and pulses. A high natural-fibre diet may reduce the risk of colon and rectal cancer.
  5. Avoid too much sugar. How sugar feeds cancer is explained a little further on. A diet high in sugar promotes tooth decay.Sugary foods are also often high in fat and calories and low in vitamins and minerals.
  6. Avoid too much sodium. Too much sodium in the diet may contribute to high blood pressure, especially for people with a family history of high blood pressure. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
  7. I do not advocate the use of alcohol, when one is considering preventing cancer. However, if you do drink alcoholic beverages, please restrict to one or two small glasses of organically produced red wine once or twice each week. This will provide a few antioxidant compounds. Drinking too much can lead to many health problems. Heavy drinking is associated with cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus and liver. Cancer risk is especially high for heavy drinkers who also smoke. Alcoholic drinks are also high in calories and deplete your vitamin and mineral status.

Hypertension - How To Reduce Your Blood Pressure

By Nicolle Mitchell

This is the medical name for high blood pressure. It can be caused by many things including stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, anxiety & smoking.
There are a number of things you can do to help reduce your blood pressure; I recommend that you do this with support of your doctor or qualified health practitioner:
  • Eat a more balanced diet, with less dairy & full fat products; less red meat (6oz a week is a good guide), & definitely cut out sugar. Read the labels of everything you buy to be aware of hidden sugars.
  • Replace your usual cooking oil with organic, cold pressed olive oil.
  • Reduce your intake of salt, including peanuts, crisps, crackers & processed or junk foods.
  • Some people have found that taking co-enzyme Q10 can help reduce high blood pressure, especially if they are on statins. Speak to your GP & health food shop for advice.
  • Others also find that ensuring they get enough B complex vitamins is helpful. So either eat plenty of organic green leafy vegetables, or obtain a good quality supplement from your health food shop. Liquid vitamins are the best; followed by capsules, tablet form being the least effective & healthy option.
  • Ensure you are absorbing enough calcium & eat plenty of raw green vegetables, artichokes & parsley. In one study conducted by DR McCarron, 45% of the subjects who were given a 1000mg/day calcium supplement normalised their blood pressure.
  • Australian researchers have discovered that blood pressure can be reduced by increasing the fibre & protein in your diet. So long as you do not have a kidney disorder, increasing your intake of (organic where possible) fresh fruit & vegetables, & soya protein in particular, you may well be able to get your blood pressure under control.
  • Quit smoking! There are support measures that can help, e.g. counselling, hypnotherapy, help lines, etc. see your GP, health practitioner or local library for details.
  • Get fit. Again seek out local facilities which suit you for taking up exercise you enjoy. Go with a friend to give you both support. Reward yourself with something appropriate when you achieve goals & make these reasonable, i.e. start off with small steps & build up to a routine you enjoy. 20 minutes of aerobic exercise, 3 times a week is the current government recommendation, but anything is an improvement.
  • Get de-stressed! Research shows that if you counteract stressful situations with de-stressing activity, you will be less fraught, function better, & be healthier. So indulge in time out or a therapy that suits you on a regular basis. No need to feel guilty; everyone around you will prefer the more relaxed you, & you will be more healthy & have more energy to spend on yourself & others. Massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology to name but a few are all therapies that can help.
  • Increase your consumption of garlic, cherries, strawberries, oranges, grapes, olives, wholegrain rice & rye.
  • Cut down or cut out salt. Check all your food labels for hidden salt.
  • Garlic & hawthorn are excellent & natural ways of controlling your blood pressure.
  • Lavender, may chang & sweet marjoram essential oils all have hypotensive qualities, which means they help lower your blood pressure as well as reducing anxiety. Use them in a relaxing bath, burn them in an oil diffuser, or add them to an oil/cream & massage it into your body as part of your daily body care routine.
  • Grapes may help reduce high blood pressure due to the flavenoids they contain. However, you would need to eat a large bunch daily, so as part of a balanced diet they would be a wise inclusion.

Kekurangan Vitamin K

- ASI hanya sedikit mengandung vitamin K.

Keluarnya Sel Telur Dari Ovarium Seorang Wanita

KANKER PROSTAT : Deteksi Secara Dini Dengan Pemeriksaan PSA

Deteksi Secara Dini Dengan Pemeriksaan PSA ( Prostate Spesific Antigen )

Kanker Prostat

Apa Penyebab Kanker Prostat ?

Bagaimana Gejala Kanker Prostat ?

Gejala Kanker Prostat & BPH :

* Sering kencing
* Sulit kencing
* Nyeri saat berkemih
* Urine (air kencing) berdarah
* Nyeri saat ejakulasi
* Cairan ejakulasi berdarah
* Gangguan ereksi
* Nyeri pinggul atau punggung
* dan lain-lain

Bagaimana Mencegah Kanker Prostat ?

Diagnosis Kanker Prostat
Diagnosis kanker prostat dipastikan berdasarkan beberapa prosedur diagnosis yaitu :

(2). C-PSA : pemeriksaan belum tersedia, masih diteliti/dievaluasi oleh bagian

Pengobatan Kanker Prostat
Ada beberapa cara penanganan kanker prostat yaitu :

* Cukup diamati dan dipantau perkembangannya dengan melakukan pemeriksaan PSA
* Pengangkatan kelenjar prostat
* Radiasi
* Terapi hormonal

Pemilihan pengobatan tergantung stadium penyakit dan kondisi pasien.

Pemeriksaan PSA
